AI agent payments

AI agent commerce is the fastest-growing stablecoin vertical. Protocols like x402 and Skyfire let agents pay APIs in USDC with sub-second settlement on Base or Solana. Foundation model providers, agent marketplaces and SaaS APIs are all building 402-aware payment surfaces.

How it works

How it works

An agent (Claude, GPT, custom) needs an API. The API responds with HTTP 402 and a payment requirement. The agent's wallet middleware pays in USDC via x402 (or Skyfire, or Coinbase Agent Payments). The API responds with the requested data. Per-call accounting and policy enforcement happen at the wallet layer.

  1. 01 Agent issues request to a 402-protected API
  2. 02 Server replies 402 Payment Required with payment requirements (amount, recipient, deadline)
  3. 03 Agent's wallet evaluates policy (budget, allowed recipients) and signs the payment
  4. 04 Payment broadcasts to Base; settles in ~2 seconds
  5. 05 Agent retries the request with payment proof — server verifies and serves
Real-world examples

Real-world examples

x402 + Anthropic agent payments

300K+ daily calls

Anthropic's Claude tool-use plus x402 lets agents pay for API access without API keys, enabling true autonomous research with per-query billing.

Coinbase Agent Payments + LangChain

180K wallets

LangChain's official agent toolkit ships with CDP wallet support; agents can pay for data sources, browsing APIs and sub-agent services.

Skyfire KYA in foundation model resale

1.8K merchants

Skyfire's Know-Your-Agent passport enables foundation model providers to price-discriminate between agents (per-token rates vary by agent reputation).

Challenges

Challenges

  • Autonomous spending without a human in the loop has unsettled AML/KYC implications
  • Idempotency at high call rates (10K+ calls/sec on Base soon to be a real bottleneck)
  • Dispute resolution when an agent pays for a buggy response
  • Inter-agent payment composability (nested supply chains)
Future outlook

Future outlook

Annual volume should cross $25B in 2027 as foundation model providers, code execution environments and data marketplaces all adopt 402-style payment requirements. Expect inter-agent supply chains where one agent pays another agent to complete a sub-task; this requires nested wallet policies and may push the protocol stack toward agent-passport identity standards.
